The journey begins, how will it end?

We’ve already seen the initial demonstrations around the lighting of the Olympic flame.

I wonder how many more we ill see as the supposed symbol of piece is paraded around the world, we could end up seeing (or not as the case may be) the Olympic flame carried through the streets of the world, surrounded by a phalanx of security guards complete  destroying the meaning of its original purpose.

I can only think that when London hosts the flame route the whole thing could get even worse.

NUT is NUTS!

Give me a break. Next we’ll be banning the Fire and Ambulance Service from recruiting in schools – we don’t want anybody seeing a burnt body or a massive head/leg injury in a car accident!!

We live in a very real world and yes some jobs do carry some risks, even teaching!

Perhaps Paul McGarr would accept that it is okay for his Socialist Workers Party to recruit in schools – they always paint such a rosy picture of the world! Stick to teaching Mr. McCarr; it’s what you’re paid for!

I did a Google search on Paul McGarr it turns out that he is a Socialist historian, author, political activist and member of the Socialist Workers Party and Respect.

More Colossus Videos available

With the release of a new Colossus Computer video from Silicon.Com, it adds to the growing list of online information about this important computer development that helped shorten and win WWII.

The Colossus development should have positioned the UK to lead the computing world after WWII, sadly this was not to be the case for various reasons such as security and lack of business foresight.

Here are some more links to Colossus related information.

Suffering set to continue in Zimbabwe!

With elections due this weekend and Robert Mugabe likely to win again, one wonders what the UK and USA Governments are now going to do to help resolve the ongoing suffering of the Zimbabwe population, considering how successful their tyrant liberation policy has been so far in Iraq!

But hang on a moment, I don’t think there’s any oil in Zimbabwe!

Backup your data; please!

I still come across businesses that seem so cavalier with their own data, it’s a wonder to how that stay in business – unfortunately many don’t after a serious event like a fire or flood!

What I find even more amazing are the companies that spend large amounts of money on exotic backup architectures, but never find time to actually test a restore their backups – finding out after the event is no time to discover that there’s actually nothing on the back up tape!

Many home PC users are also just as much in the dark about backups, which is surprising when just about every PC that is sold has a RW device and with free (albeit basic) backup software available on the Internet it could not be easier.

It’s even more amazing when you think that 8GB memory sticks are now available for under £50.00; less than it now takes to fill the average family car with petrol!

Back up that PC’s you’re never sure when you’ll need it.

24MB Internet connections for the UK!

With a number of recent re-announcements about BT rolling out its 21CN 24MB Internet connection architecture across the UK next month following trial in South Wales, I came across this 21CN roll-out map.

Copyright - BT

As I constantly struggle to maintain 4Mb connection speeds, it will be interesting to find out what increase in speed this new architecture delivers for me, and of course how much  more I have to pay for it.

Here is some more info from the BT 21CN web site.

FI back at the Beeb!

Interesting announcement this morning that F1 is moving back to the BBC for the 2009 season.

At last, no adverts to deal with! However, I do hope that the BBC take on board what ITV has done with their coverage which I think has enhanced the televising of the sport. The BBC coverage had grown a bit long in tooth and ITV did bring a breath of fresh air to it.

Next thing to think about is who will be the lead commentator? Clearly Murray is too old to bring back for each race, I suppose that we’ll still get the ‘informed comments from Martin Brundle, but let hope they pick someone who’s voice is easy to listen to, unlike that Brian Moore on the Rugby! God what a voice and what an attitude!
