An act of War!

I’ve been catching up on recent events including the unbelievable announcement by US Navy Rear Admiral Harry Harris that the recent suicides by detainees at the US Guantanamo detection camp were acts of war!

I’ve seen a lot written about this subject over the past few days and can only add my disbelief at someone who I assume to be a person of average intelligence not being able to use it and comes to this warped conclusion.

I found an excellent piece by Charles Stross on this subject which I think must sum up what the average normal person must think this sorry state of affairs.

I would suggest that  Rear Admiral Harry Harris doesn’t apply for any kind of PR job when he retires from the US Navy, but there again I expect he is already lined for one!

  1. Adm Harris is a man of intelligence. I spent 4 months deployed, riding the his ship as an embarked staff. If you consider that the act of suicide is routinely used as a tactic, as it was at the Marine Barracks in Beriut, on 9/11, in London, in public places and on busses across the Middle East, why would you think this wouldn’t be a likely possibility?Would those who committed suicide have to have killed others in the act in order for it to be considered a part of the tactics used? What about those suicide bombers who have blown themselves up in bomb production, or enroute thier target area, and died alone? We’ll not know for sure, I wouldn’t consider Adm Harris’ statements out of the realm of possibility, given the current state of world affairs.

  2. I don’t doubt Adm Harris’s intelligence, but I do question it.I would liken their acts to those of the ‘monks’ self-immolation during the years of the Vietnam war. Sure an ‘act of demonstration’ brought on by the frustration of ‘no-hope’, but not an act of war! However, like you say, nothing is impossible in this current crazy mixed up world.
