Online betting saga continues

I’ve been following the online betting story as it unfolds for the various players as the USA assembles it prosecution case against the various companies and people involved.

Some things seem odd to me, why has USA has taken such drastic action, is it because they didn’t come up with the idea in the first place? Of course one has to consider that this prosecution is taking place in a country that has one on the worlds largest Pornography industries in the world, much of it online and accessible by overseas (relative to the USA) visitors!

Looking at one of the stories (USA Today) that came to my desktop this morning shows that their seems to be a degree of  focus on the share of the online betting millions that are not getting to the USA Treasury.

One has to surmise that if online betting had been developed in the USA and the home industry was paying all its relevant taxes to the USA Treasury, then any court case would have been sorted out ages ago (like Pornography was!) and the USA would now be reaping all the benefits.

Sounds like a bit of not invented here I think.

So, Ma Lai was not an isolated incident

Ma Lai was seen as the pinnacle of atrocities during the Vietnam War, but now it seems that this was not an as isolated a case, as previously thought.

Research by Los Angeles Times (LAT) reporters Nick Turse and Deborah Nelson into recently released declassified Army files, show that the 1968 My Lai massacre was in fact not an isolated incident.

Turse and Nelson have put together a detailed study on the many other similar incidents from the shooting of an unarmed 10 year old boy to the murder of a 19 year old girl teenager along with many unarmed villagers. The full LAT story can be found here, (I wonder why the LAT has not put any reference to the story on its front page!) but make sure that you look at the research links used by the reporters on the right hand side of the LAT page.

This will make difficult reading for many, as it will be used as a comparison in the ongoing investigations into the recently recorded incidents by US troops in Iraq such a Kilo Company at Haditha in November 2005.

I wonder how many more, yet to be reported incidents have happened in Iraq? Will we have to wait another 38 years to find out about those?

On things Nuclear or, where is the Gas?

Following on from my previous Nuclear post. It’s good to see that the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) have published its final recommendations for dealing with the long-term management of the UK radioactive waste.

It comes at a time, when the UK is facing important decisions that it must make about the generation of its energy needs as we move towards the end of the first decade of this new century. See the latest Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) energy review for the latest UK government view. If we (the UK) do, (as I believe that we should), re-invest in a new generation of nuclear fueled electricity generation stations, it is important that there is a clear methodology available on how we should deal with the inevitable nuclear waste.

Why do I believe that we should re-invest in new nuclear fueled electricity generation stations? How else can we sustain today’s technology driven society without having a more secured generation capacity (interesting document from British Energy who generate around one-fifth of the UK’s power needs).

It seems to me that despite a serious need to reduce consumption through various conservation means [1], [2], [3], we must still ensure that we have our own ability to generate electricity without an increasing reliance in energy imports, particularly gas and to a lesser extent oil as more power is generated from gas than oil.

Here, in this Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) Note of October 2004, there is a very clear indication in the Overview of what the future circumstances of UK gas imports would be for today – 2006, and more importantly what the predicted gas import figure could be, by 2020 – “The UK’s indigenous gas supply is diminishing. By 2006 the UK is expected to be a net gas importer; by 2020 up to 80% of the UK’s gas will be imported.”

With Russia already showing it new found energy muscles in slowing down delivery of supply – vis a vis the Ukranie – do we really want to be at the behest of overseas countries as to where and when we can use our own power?

The current UK Government needs to take a better long term view with regards to the various aspects of the UK’s infrastructure such as power generation, water & sewerage provision and transport, but in particularly power generation. My opinion is that this and past governments (political parties) have seemed to more interested in their own ‘dogma’ and short term re-election campaigns than in the long term future of the UK and its needs when it comes to power requirements.

Also with nearly all of our major power generators (and other aspects of infrastructure) now in private (and often non-UK) hands it is very likely that their future focus will be for short term shareholder profits rather than long term planning.

We need action by the government on new nuclear power stations now, before we end up having blackouts because we’ve run out of power or before someone has turned the supply of gas off!

I receive a reply!

A while ago I wrote two posts about a possible intention by the current Labour Government to consider a replacement for the UK current and aging Trident Nuclear missile system that is carried on board certain UK Nuclear Submarines.

I have already set out my opposition to any replacement as it will be a waste of money for the protection (if any) that it is proposed to give to the UK population.

One of the posts related to my encouragement that everyone in the UK should write to their MP’s using the TheyWorkForYou or WriteToThem web sites (where you make direct contact via email) to find out what their MP thinks about the subject as to ascertain how they will vote.

I wrote to my MP, John Redwood with some basic questions about the subject and received the reply last week, unfortunately not a by email, but by post! Still at least I have had an acknowledgement of my concerns and what John Redwood will do with regards to the subject.

Here’s a copy of the reply, I’ll keep the blog posted on what happens next my reply to his letter.

Am I hearing right?

So John Read is making more announcements about new changes to the home office and sentencing and how things are now going to get better!

Forgive me for asking Mr Blair; but have you not been in power for over 7 years and is this not the 4th/5th/6th (I’ve lost count) incumbent at the home office and still we wait for the improvements to appear.

I understand that there might not be too many capable people amongst all the Labour MP’s that could do the job. But if it has taken you ‘N attempts’ to find the right person – this of course is still to be proven – then, does this not call into question your judgment in people and your ability to find the right person for the job.

I suspect that you are glad that you don’t work in industry as I am sure that the company that you were running would by now have gone out of business if you had made the same hiring decision! Or, perhaps you would have lost your MD/CEO job, as the main board would have pushed you out by now, but of course that doesn’t happen in politics does it?

At last it arrived!

Yes it finally arrived! Yes its the new Royal Mail easy to understand guide to the UK new postal prices to be introduced on the 21st August 2006.

I wish that I had managed to get the contract to sell this idea to the Royal Mail, whoever did, must have made a huge amount of money. I cannot understand why they need to introduce such a complex system for posting items. I am sure that this is going to cause a massive amount of confusion before, on the day and for many days afterward, particularly around Christmas time.

Yes ‘I’ understand the need for some of the ideas behind the changes, however, I can only think that this will cause many people (particularly the elderly) to stop sending letters if we now have to put each letter through the cardboard template just to determine what we should pay for postage.

I think in the end, that this new idea may well go the way of many other bright ideas thought up by marketing types, without them actually being users of the services to be changed.

At last as chance to make a change!

Following on from my previous post about Trident missile replacement, MP’s are to get the chance to vote on whether there is to be a replacement for the Trident missile system.

I am glad that Tony Blair took note of my previous post on the subject and has agreed to this vote – how condescending!

Now its up to you! You must write to your MP to find out how they intend to vote and why and if you don’t agree with them, then you must write again and get them to change their mind.

The best way to do this is to use the TheyWorkForYou or WriteToThem web sites, these are very easy to use web sites that will allow you first find out who your MP is, then help you to write directly to them via email; then write again and of course write again.

You must write to your MP as this will be a very important vote that we can influence, but only if you write to your MP. By the way, did I say you must wrote to your MP about this vote.

How do feel about this subject, should we replace Trident? Let me know by sending me a comment and we’ll see how many votes we get either way.

By the way, for the record,  I don’t think we should replace it.

Come on, wrote to your MP!!!!!

"Yo Blair! What’s up"

This telling overheard conversation opener between Bush and Blair must be a total embarrassment to all concerned on both sides of the political Atlantic bridge. To hear Bush talk in this juvenile way, when many parts of the world are starting to fall apart, leaves me with a feeling of uncertainty for our future if this is the supposed leader of the free world!

If this is the sort of conversation level he (Bush) uses when talking with all other politicians (“this trade thingy” is another example) then I now understand why he won’t talk with Korea and Iran, he can’t!

What concerns me even more are the replies that Blair gave to Bush during the conversation. For those who remember it, I honestly though I was watching an episode of ‘Spitting Image’, except instead of Thatcher/Reagan or Thatcher/Cabinet we have the role reversal of Bush/Blair. If any one event that will finally convince people that he is the poodle to Bush’s Top Cat then this surely must be it.

I feel embarrassed, as must many UK citizens that we have a leader that seems akin to a panting dog jumping up at his masters side waiting for a tidbit from the table or another round of throw/fetch!

I’m sure that this episode will cause serious concern to all in the UK, confirming that on the international front, we (the UK) appear to be weaker today, than we have ever been. I have always believed that we should have a special relationship with the USA, we have many common aims.

However, if this is where we are with our special relationship, then I think it’s high time that we abandon it and move significantly towards a closer integration with Europe. Controversial? Not half a much as I think this G8 ‘overheard conversation’ will prove to be in the coming days!

See the front page of The Independent as to how they have covered the story.

"I’m still just as shocked by litany of patients’ horror stories"

The quote is from Peter Cullimore has just stepped down after more than 10 years as ITV Wales Health Correspondent. Read his personal views on how the Welsh health service has performed over a decade reporting unprecedented upheaval and controversy in the Welsh National Health Service.

Sadly it does not make good reading and we expect that we will see more upheaval and potential Job Loses in the coming months.
